We're happy to have you with us. We are here to help you. This web page will explains the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program and explains how to use your WIC Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card. If you have any questions after reading this page, please ask your local WIC staff.
How long can I stay on WIC?
- If you meet the income and nutrition requirements:
- Infants and children can stay on WIC until age 5.
- Women who are pregnant receive WIC benefits for the duration of the pregnancy.
- Women who are exclusively or mostly breastfeeding receive WIC benefits until their baby is 1 year old.
- Women who are mostly or only-formula feeding receive WIC food benefits until their baby is 6 months old.
How can I help the WIC program work for me?
- Keep your WIC appointments. We've made this appointment just for you.
- If you can't keep an appointment or miss an appointment, please call (254) 893-5926. Not doing so will delay your benefits, and you may even lose some benefits.
- Take the Texas WIC Shopping Guide and your WIC Shopping List to the grocery store to help you choose the right foods.
- You cannot return WIC foods to the store for money or sell WIC food to anyone.
- Tell the local WIC staff about changes in your name, address, or phone number - including if you are planning to move.
WIC nutrition professionals tailor a personal nutrition plan for your family basedon the interests and concerns you discuss during your WIC appointment. Take advantage of this opportunity during your next visit. And remember, we've set aside this time especially for you!
What is the WIC EBT card?
- It looks and works like a debit card.
- It stores and keeps track of your WIC food benefits.
How do I recieve my WIC food benefits?
- You must bring your WIC EBT card to each clinic visit. If you forget to bring your card to your WIC appointment, you will need to reschedule the appointment. No benefits can be issued without your WIC EBT card.
- The WIC staff members will load your family's information and up to three months of WIC food benefits onto your card. They will also provide a WIC Shopping List that tells you how much food you have loaded on your card.
- WIC staff will activate your card so it is ready to use. You may go to any store that accepts WIC to use your benefits.
- WIC staff members will schedule your future appointments before your last set of food benefits expires.
How much time do I have to use my food benefits?
- Each month, your WIC food benefits are good from the first day of the month until the last day of the month. Don't wait until the end of the month to use your WIC food benefits.
- Any foods you do not buy before the end of the month will be lost.
Do I have to buy a certain amount of food at each trip to the grocery store?
- No, you can choose how much of your WIC food benefits you wish to use at each shopping trip. For example, you can buy some produce this week and the rest throughout the month. It's up to you. This is true for formula and all other foods, too.
What will happen at the grocery store?
- Use your WIC Shopping List to select your foods.
- Tell the cashier that you will be using your EBT card.
- Ask the cashier if you need to separate your WIC foods from your other foods.
- When the cashier tells you, insert your card in the card reader and enter your PIN. Leave your card in the reader until the cashier tells you to remove it.
- Once your items are scanned, review your receipt to make sure your WIC purchases are listed and correct.
- Each time you use your EBT card at the store, you will receive a receipt that shows the foods you have left for the month.
- If you lose your receipt, come to the WIC office or go to the grocery store to get a new one with your last balance.
- If you experience a problem buying your WIC foods, call 1-800-942-3678
What if a WIC item is not listed on my receipt as a WIC purchase?
- The card reader identifies which foods you can buy with your EBT card.
- You may have selected an item that is the wrong size or the wrong brand.
- You may not have enough benefits left on your card for the item.
- You can choose to pay for the item with your other groceries.
- If you do not want to buy the item as a non-WIC purchase, tell the cashier you do not want the item.
What if I need someone else to go to the store for me?
- Give that person your WIC EBT card and you PIN. Make sure the person is someone you trust.
Is the WIC EBT card the same as my Lone Star Food Stamp card?
- No, although they look about the same, your WIC EBT card is seperate from your Food Stamp card, also known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistanct Program (SNAP) card. Your WIC card has a gold chip on the front.
